​Fall is officially here, though high school fall sports are well underway.Pensacola Catholic girls volleyball continued to roll with another 3-0 week, while Jay picked up a huge district win over Baker on Sept. 15. Gulf Breeze, who checked in as the No. 2 overall team in 5A in last week’s FHSAA rankings, was upset by Niceville in five sets on Sept. 17 in a key District 1-5A matchup.Most of the area’s cross country teams went across state lines to compete in the Daphne Invitational, with Gulf Breeze leading the way by finishing fourth. Dolphins senior Ashton Dahlem was the top area finisher, placing third in 19:13.7.Gulf Breeze girls golf also flexed their district muscles, topping Pace in a tri-match with Milton.Now it’s time to meet the nominees for this week’s Florida Power & Light PNJ Girls Athlete of the Week. West Florida swimming’s Marcela Dos Santos won this week’s award in the poll with our highest participation yet, capturing 30.7 percent of just under 48,000 votes.Now it’s time to make your voice heard again. Voting closes at 11 a.m Saturday, and the winners will be announced each Monday after the poll closes.
