Carlisle United midfielder Callum Whelan is calling upon his side to run and fight harder to kick-start their stuttering season. The 1-0 loss at Eastleigh made it four games without a win and left the Blues only two points above the relegation zone. One of the pre-season favourites to win the league, Carlisle have only won two of their nine games and are 13 points adrift of unbeaten leaders Boreham Wood.Defeat in Hampshire was the lowest point of the campaign so far and Whelan said he hoped it marked a line in the sand.”I hope that was a blip on its own because that wasn’t good enough,” he told BBC Radio Cumbria.”System, formation, I’m not really interested. We didn’t run harder than the opposition, we didn’t fight harder, we lost too many duels.”It’s not what we pride ourselves on.” Midfielder Whelan, 27, came off the bench at Eastleigh in his first appearance since the opening day after suffering a hamstring injury. He has been sat on the sidelines seeing points squandered as Carlisle adjust to their new head coach Rob Elliot, but with nearly 20% of the season gone, improvement is needed.”I’m a bit fed up of saying ‘when it clicks’ and ‘when, when, when’,” he said.”As a group of players, we’ve got to start taking responsibility. First of all, making sure we win games but performing way better than that and working way harder than that.”
