​Real Madrid TV fires back at Atletico after ‘stop refereeing harassment’ campaign: ‘They call for respect, but only sometimes’Real Madrid TV has responded to Atletico Madrid’s latest refereeing campaign by revisiting a series of controversial moments involving the club, Diego Simeone and Atletico’s own public statements.The response came after Atletico posted “Stop refereeing harassment” and followed it with the slogan“three weeks now with the machinery running at full throttle”. Real Madrid TV responded ironically, using an image of Jose Mourinho alongside footage and comments surrounding the recent Madrid derby.The club channel then devoted an extended video to what it presented as examples of Atletico demanding respect for referees only when decisions go against them.Real Madrid TV revisits Atletico’s past complaintsThe voiceover begins by recalling incidents from recent years, arguing that Atletico’s approach to refereeing has not always matched its current calls for respect.“Memories are short; they call for respect for the referees, but only sometimes. “Now they demand respect, but if they don’t like what they see, out comes the press release.”Diego Simeone features heavily in the compilation. Real Madrid TV highlighted his previous description of La Liga as “dangerously tailored to Real Madrid”, as well as his Champions League press conference when he asked: “Raise your hand if you’ve seen Julian take two touches.”The Atletico manager also appears in footage involving heated exchanges with officials, which Real Madrid TV used to question the club’s current position.“There isn’t much respect here; rather, there are insults directed at the referees,” the voiceover says, before recalling an Atletico statement following another derby which claimed, “Anyone observing from the outside can see that the same thing has been happening for a decade; that’s just how the system works – we’ve got used to it.”Atletico’s own social media posts come under fireReal Madrid TV also returned to a post from Atletico’s official account which asked: “Retweet if you want the rules to apply to everyone.”The video contrasts that message with footage of Arda Turan throwing a boot towards a linesman, before adding another criticism of Atletico’s current campaign.“You ask for respect, but you post tweets when things don’t go your way. Respect goes out the window when things go against you. “If you benefit, you show respect; if you’re at a disadvantage, not so much,” the voiceover states.Finally, the compilation ends by referencing former Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano, describing him as now being “in charge of appointing referees”.
