​WAYMART — Red Maples has been a fixture on the Wayne County links scene for more than six decades.Owned and operated by the Pozza family, the idyllic public course opened in 1964 and golfers from all over Wayne County quickly embraced its picturesque layout.Over the course of the past 62 years, Red Maples has hosted countless leagues and tournaments while also providing the backdrop for many outstanding individual accomplishments.However, none of those milestone moments measure up to the round that Western Wayne junior Archer Long recently authored amid the rolling emerald farmland.More: Western Wayne football coach Dave Shimkosky earns his first varsity winAlso by Kevin Edwards: Western Wayne girls soccer team aims to defend division titleOn Sept. 16, Long powered his way to a brand new Red Maples course record with a sizzling score of 26. His 7-under par masterpiece led the Wildcats to a big Lackawanna League victory over Riverside.“It was a really good day,” Long said. “Everything was working for me and all my putts were falling. I definitely have to give a shoutout to my teammates because that round isn’t happening without them.”All the stars alignedLong is a talented multi-sport athlete who also excels in baseball and basketball.He learned to play golf under the watchful eyes of his father, Brian, who sadly passed away in April. And while that loss has been nothing short of heartbreaking, Long still feels his dad’s presence whenever he’s on the course.“Dad was definitely my biggest fan,” Long said. “He’s always on my mind when I’m playing and I know he was with me when I set the record that’s for sure.”Long opened his historic round with a par on the first hole. He then birdied both two and three, setting the stage for what he describes as the key moment of his day.The fourth hole at Red Maples is a tricky par-4 that plays about 230 yards. Long strode confidently onto the tee and drove the green with a nine wood. He then stepped up and drained a 30-foot putt for eagle.“It was a big breaker to the left and it just fell right in,” Long said. “My buddy Noah Benson was reading putts for me and he did a super job.”Long parred the fifth, then notched back-to-back birdies at six and seven. After parring a short, tricky eighth, he crushed his drive on nine, chipped close and nailed the putt.At the conclusion of the round, Long’s scorecard showed three pars, five birdies and an eagle.“Archer is so mature and composed for such a young man,” Western Wayne coach Marty O’Hora said. “He has great focus and is incredibly consistent. Nothing riles Archer up — he just goes about his business and gets the job done.”The previous record for a 9-hole round at Red Maples was 28, most recently achieved earlier this summer by former Western Wayne links star Landon Firmstone.Talent and depthWith Long leading the charge, Western Wayne is enjoying another stellar season in league action.The Wildcats are currently 11-1
