​GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Former Detroit Red Wing Dan Cleary is taking over as the new interim general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins. The AHL team announced Friday Cleary was taking the role. In a statement posted to social media, Cleary said he was “super excited” to join the program. “I am there to give (staff, coaches and players) what they need and to help them,” the statement read in part. “I know everyone’s goal is to play in the NHL. … Some of these young guys may take a little longer, some of the old guys have already done it. So, combining that mix of youth and veterans … I am going to be a soundboard, open door and whatever they need.”Cleary played in the NHL between 1997 and 2015, including 10 seasons with the Red Wings. He moves into the Griffins interim GM role after Shawn Horcoff was called up last week to serve as the interim general manager of the Red Wings.
