​A prominent longtime executive with the Philadelphia Phillies organization has died.Phillies Chairman Emeritus Bill Giles passed away Friday afternoon at his home in Gladwyne. He was 92.Giles began his career with the Phillies in 1969 as vice president of business operations and rose through the ranks over the following decades.”The Phillies family lost an icon today,” said the team’s Managing Partner and CEO John Middleton. “Bill helped to reshape our franchise from a traditional baseball club into a highly visible entertainment and business operation.”During his tenure, Giles played a key role in the development and opening of both Veterans Stadium and Citizens Bank Park.He was also instrumental in the creation of the Phillie Phanatic, the beloved mascot who became one of the most recognizable figures in professional sports.”His profound impact in overseeing one of the greatest eras in franchise history, both on and off the field, will forever be his legacy. Our hearts are heavy for the Giles family and all those who had the privilege of knowing Bill,” added Middleton.Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
