​BERKELEY, CA — Gideon Davidson had a confession to make after Clemson was belted by LSU 51-10 in Week 1, its worst loss under coach Dabo Swinney.The sophomore running back, who had just 20 yards on seven carries in Baton Rouge, admitted he was on social media too much and that he wasn’t focused. He promised to not look at it heading into Clemson’s next game against Georgia Southern, and be more locked in going forward.It’s safe to say Davidson is locked in now.Davidson has now rushed for over 100 yards in consecutive games, with his latest being a career performance of 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 24-10 victory for the Tigers (3-1, 2-0 ACC) over California (2-2, 1-1) on Sept. 25.Facing a rushing defense that ranked fourth-to-last in the ACC for rushing yards allowed per game, Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris heavily involved Davidson in his game plan. Davidson carried the ball 22 times against the Golden Bears, and his 75-yard touchdown on a third-and-8 draw play with 2:58 left capped Clemson’s victory.Davidson’s sprint through an open lane gives him hope that he can pull off that acceleration and vision in the future.”Being able to know I can hit those kind of runs, and being confident in my (offensive line), gives you the ability to run like I have been running,” Davidson said.When asked how he tried to be more focused after the heavy LSU defeat, Davidson gave several reasons. He listened to advice from coaches more, increasingly studied Clemson’s rushing and blocking schemes and “running the right tracks” in practice. He says that work has helped him play better since then.A good sign that Davidson is staying focused is that the Cal game doesn’t satisfy him enough. He wants more.”I would say there’s a lot to learn, definitely saying there’s growth for sure,” Davidson said. “I definitely think I can play a little bit better.”If Davidson can play better than what he’s doing now, the Tigers would love to see it. I mean, it really is. You could just see he was close. He goes from getting his first touchdown to now he’s got two tonight and breaks another long run.
