​Mariyah Dupuch has spent much of her Claremore volleyball career providing a spark without ever touching the ball.On Senior Night, however, she finally got an opportunity to provide one from the service line.Dupuch stepped behind it during the second set of Class 5A No. 2 Claremore’s sweep of Catoosa on Thursday at the Doug K. Mosier Athletic Complex and promptly delivered 3 aces during a pivotal Lady Zebra run.For a senior who has embraced an important role despite rarely receiving significant varsity playing time, the moment carried considerably more weight than 3 points on a scoresheet.“It’s amazing,” Dupuch said. “I know I don’t get as much playing time as I would hope for, but I just love being around my teammates and being around this community. It’s such a great community, and they genuinely make me a better person.”Dupuch helped turn a 9-7 Claremore advantage into a 23-7 cushion. She served 3 aces during the 14-0 surge, while fellow seniors Ava Tanner, Addison Doyle and Grace Baughman also chipped in.The Lady Zebras rolled from there, winning the set 25-9 on their way to a 25-13, 25-9, 25-20 sweep.For Dupuch, hearing the reaction from her teammates and the Claremore crowd made the opportunity particularly meaningful.“It felt good having and hearing cheers for me, and it was just good,” she said. “It felt good.”Although her action is limited, the defensive specialist has never let that stop her from finding other ways to contribute.Most often, Dupuch’s impact comes from the sideline, and when somebody else gets the opportunity to play, Dupuch makes sure she is cheering.“I just love to keep the energy up for everybody,” Dupuch said. “Like when things are down, I love to make people laugh and just have a good time. I make sure we’re all OK. I like to check up on people and just be the person that everybody can talk to.”That willingness to embrace a less-visible role has been especially important considering how unusual her path to Claremore became.Dupuch transferred from Colorado before her junior year, but an obscure Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association transfer rule prevented her from competing at the varsity level last season.Even Claremore coach Derek Jackson struggled to explain the intricacies of the rule, describing the situation as confusing and wild.“With her having to sit and just play JV [last year] and get better, she’s done a great job of not being selfish in the slightest,” Jackson said. “She’s an amazing human and an amazing player. She’s a phenomenal role player … She takes on that role that helps balance the tough intenseness by being fun and upbeat.”It meant Dupuch lost an entire varsity season through circumstances outside the normal competition for playing time.Yet she stayed.She continued supporting her teammates, continued bringing energy to the gym and eventually received the opportunity to wear a Lady Zebras uniform at the varsity level as a senior.“I can put in more e
