​Pitcher Liam Hendriks announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Tuesday, Sept. 29, ending a 14-year career that included three All-Star selections, two American League Reliever of the Year awards and a comeback from non-Hodgkin lymphoma.The 37-year-old right-hander announced his decision on social media, saying his arm and elbow had made it clear that it was time to stop pitching.“After years of staring down hitters, I have decided to officially retire from Major League Baseball,” Hendriks wrote on Instagram. “My arm has told me in no uncertain terms that it has exactly zero fastballs left in it, and my elbow has made it clear that throwing anything harder than a light breeze now requires a three-day recovery window.”MORE: Pope Leo XIV sends message to White Sox before MLB postseasonHendriks finished his career with 116 saves, a 3.88 ERA and 739 strikeouts in 663.2 innings. He played for six organizations, beginning with the Minnesota Twins in 2011 and also spending time with the Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox.The Australian’s most dominant stretch came from 2019-22 with Oakland and Chicago. Hendriks became a full-time closer with the Athletics in 2019 and made three consecutive All-Star teams from 2019-21. He led the AL with 38 saves in 2021 and earned the first of his two Reliever of the Year awards that season. He followed with 37 saves in 2022 for the White Sox.Hendriks’ career took a dramatic turn after the 2022 season, when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He completed chemotherapy in April 2023 and returned to the White Sox in May, making five appearances before an elbow injury led to Tommy John surgery. After the Red Sox declined their option for 2026, Hendriks signed minor league deals with Minnesota and later the Cubs.
