​The Tampa Bay Rays could know who they face in the American League Division Series as early as Wednesday evening, as the New York Yankees take care of business in dominant fashion against the Boston Red Sox in the first game of the AL Wild Card. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox 9-0 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, led by great pitching and a fantastic performance from one of their top sluggers. The Bronx Bombers take a 1-0 lead in a best-of-three series against the Red Sox. Here is what you need to know from the contest. Cam Schlittler was on fire. The Yankees right-hander continues to show why he is one of the top candidates for the American League Cy Young Award. On Tuesday night, Schlittler was nearly unhittable. He only allowed two hits and one walk on 6.1 innings of work. During that time, he struck out ten Boston Red Sox batters and went for 117 pitches, the most for a Yankee starting pitcher in the playoffs since CC Sabathia did it in 2012. If the Yankees were to move on, Schlitter could potentially face the Rays for the fourth time this season. So far this year against Tampa Bay, he’s 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA across 16 innings of work. During that time, he’s allowed 14 hits, 5 earned runs, and has a 21:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Ben Rice could not be stopped.The Yankees’ pitching is what kept them in the game, but it was Ben Rice who broke it open and sealed the deal early in the eighth inning for the New York Yankees. The entire New York team recorded 12 hits on the day, including two home runs, both of them coming from the Yankees’ DH, Ben Rice. Rice went 4 for 5 with those two home runs and six RBIs in the wild card matchup. Rice is battling players like Yordan Alvarez and Junior Caminero for American League MVP votes, and on Tuesday he showed exactly why that’s the case. It could all be over tomorrow. The New York Yankees could complete the sweep over Boston on Wednesday night if they win game 2 of the best-of-three series. Regardless, if Rays fans want to face the Yankees over the Red Sox, this is the worst-case scenario for Tampa Bay. If this were to occur, the Yankees would find a little bit of rest before the ALDS, have a full pitching staff ready to go for Game 1 and the entire series in Tampa Bay.
