3 local storylines to follow in Week 5 of the high school football season

Oct. 1—The high school football season passes its midway mark this week. Here are three storylines to follow in southeastern Minnesota in Week 5:It’s an old term in professional golf — Moving Day — used commonly on Saturday for events that run Thursday through Sunday. It’s the day when players pull out all the stops to move up the leaderboard ahead of the final round. That’s where we are in the high school football season as it enters Week 5.After Friday’s games, we’ll begin to see some separation in races for district championships and top seeds or home-field advantage in the upcoming section playoffs.District 9-South (East) is among the most tightly packed districts in the state, regardless of class. The district includes 10 teams, seven of which are .500 or better with four regular-season games remaining. Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons is the lone unbeaten in that group, with three 3-1 teams and three 2-2 teams on ACGE’s heels. In looking at this week’s matchups, it’s possible the district could have one 4-1 team and six 3-2 teams after Friday’s play. It could also possibly have a 5-0 team and three 4-1 teams.Among the matchups to watch: ACGE (4-0) at Grand Meadow (2-2), Lanesboro (3-1) at Faribault B.A. (1-3), Mabel-Canton (2-2) at LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle/Pacelli (3-1), and Kingsland (2-2) at Spring Grove (3-1).Could Friday also be Moving Day for a locally famous traveling trophy? The Addington Jug has made its home at Rochester Mayo for the entirety of the 2020s.It goes annually to the winner of games between Rochester public-school rivals Century, John Marshall and Mayo. The rule for the Jug is simple: You win it, you keep it until one of the other two teams beats you ( or until a Mission: Impossible-style heist occurs, and the Jug is temporarily in someone else’s possession).Friday night, the Jug will be up for grabs for the first — and possibly only — time this fall, when Mayo hosts Century at 5:30 p.m. at Whitney Stadium. If Century wins, it will take possession of the Jug for the first time in seven years. If Mayo wins, the Jug will be up for grabs again next week when the Spartans play at JM.Century defeated JM 57-21 last week, so if the Panthers win at Mayo, they won’t have to defend the Jug until next fall.More importantly to each team, Friday’s game could have a great effect on seeding for the Section 1, Class 5A playoffs, which begin Oct. 27. The winner will put itself in prime position to have home-field advantage in the first round of the postseason.Century is 2-2 and coming off a dominant effort against JM. Mayo is 1-3, but its three losses are by a combined 13 points.Century snapped a four-game losing streak against JM last week. It is aiming to snap a six-game skid against Mayo this week (the Spartans have won those six games by an average of 30.7 points). Century’s last win against Mayo came in the 2019 Section 1 semifinals, a 43-13 Panthers victory.Hayfield and Blooming Prairie had a combined three victories last season.D
