Oct. 1—Northwest Christian senior Claire Wichman is about to add her name to a very exclusive list. Despite a minor discrepancy between the “official” number and her team and family’s accounting, Wichman will score her 200th career goal very soon for the Crusaders, becoming the first girls soccer player in the state to accomplish the feat.Following Thursday’s 8-2 win over Newport, in which Wichman scored four goals, she officially sits at 199 over a five-year varsity career. Her family believes her total to actually be two goals higher — that the MaxPreps’ “official” tally is missing one goal from each of her eighth- and ninth-grade seasons.Regardless, at her scoring rate she should pass the threshold on Tuesday when Northwest Christian hosts Upper Columbia Academy.”I mean, that’s just amazing. I really didn’t even know (about the record) until this year,” she said Tuesday after a hat trick in a 6-3 win over rival Freeman. “I just keep going year-by-year trying to beat my previous records, and I think it’s really cool that there is someone who gets to set that milestone for other people too.”NWC coach Steve Del Pizzo calls Wichman an “innate” goal scorer.”I don’t really know what that means,” Wichman said. “I just have a way of finding the back of the net. I don’t really have any motivation beside keeping going and winning games.””Players like her don’t come around real often,” Del Pizzo said. “I’ve been coaching for 30 years, and she’s my first true striker. She scores goals most people don’t. It’s awesome. We get away with a lot because of how good she is.”Wichman — who has played soccer since she was four years old — scored 28 goals her eighth grade season, breaking the school’s single-season record by 10. She has eclipsed that each subsequent year, scoring 42 goals as a freshman, 48 as a sophomore and 49 her senior season. Wichman leads the state with 32 goals through 10 games this season and hopes to reach the 50-goal mark this season.”She has a feel of where to be,” Del Pizzo said. “She doesn’t panic. She gets the ball at her feet, surveys, and then makes decisions. And nine out of 10 times they’re good decisions.”With six regular season games plus playoffs left, at her pace this season Wichman could end up in the top 50 goal scorers of all-time.Not surprisingly, NWC teammate Julianna Pope leads the state in assists with 19.”I just have such a good support system with my whole team and my coaches — they’re all just the best,” Wichman said. “They’re all here for me and rooting me on all my five years, so it’s really important.””She is a great young lady,” Del Pizzo said. “She runs the team. I’m a big believer in the captains run the team, and she’s done a great job. She sets the tone, she sets the example, she gets into tackles. She won’t ask anyone else to do something she isn’t willing to do herself.”Wichman wants to pursue a degree in health and fitness, and she has had discussions with a couple of schools, but despite her proli
