Why Steelers abandoned Jaylen Warren and heavy sets vs. Browns

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense finds itself mired in a frustrating identity crisis following a 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Just one week after discovering a dominant physical rhythm against the Cincinnati Bengals, head coach Mike McCarthy’s group inexplicably strayed from its winning blueprint, leaving efficiency and potential points on the table.Against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh found its offensive fastball; utilizing heavy personnel, getting running back Jaylen Warren in space, and leaning on tight ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth to dictate play. That formula reemerged early against Cleveland as Warren averaged an impressive 5.5 yards per carry, totaling 93 yards on 17 touches.Yet as the game progressed, the Steelers inexplicably abandoned the ground attack and heavy sets, opting instead for spread-out 11-personnel. Cleveland’s defense capitalized immediately, jamming receivers in man-press coverage and daring quarterback Aaron Rodgers to beat them through the air behind an inconsistent offensive line.On his “Locked on Steelers” podcast, Christopher Carter expressed disbelief over the offense’s sudden strategic pivot away from its established strengths.”And I think it went right back to not knowing its strength. And I get that you want to switch things up and keep teams guessing with certain things, but you still need to be able to have a strength,” Carter argued. “They ran the ball well in this game. Jaylen Warren had 17 carries for 93 yards. That’s five and a half yards per carry. I don’t understand why they didn’t try to keep doing that more.”The misuse of tight ends was equally baffling. Washington and Freiermuth were targeted just five times each, combining for six catches and two touchdowns despite their evident matchup advantages. If the Steelers hope to right the ship, McCarthy must stop searching for a perimeter passing game that isn’t there and commit to the physical, tight-end-heavy identity that actually moves the football. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Why Steelers abandoned Jaylen Warren and heavy sets vs. Browns
