MUNCIE — The Delta boys tennis sectional championship dynasty lives on.The Eagles extended the third-longest boys tennis sectional streak in the state as they claimed their 34th consecutive IHSAA sectional title with a 5-0 win over Muncie Burris on Thursday, Oct. 1. It marked Delta’s 15th shutout victory of the season and its 10th victory in which the Eagles conceded less than 10 total games to their opponent.”It’s a lot; just something that’s been going on for so long,” junior No. 3 singles player Luke Atkinson said. “It’s definitely bigger than ourselves and just something to be proud of.”More: 2026 IHSAA boys tennis sectional brackets for East Central IndianaOther sports highlights: Muncie Burris volleyball reverse sweeps Winchester in Class 2A top-10 matchupAtkinson was the first Eagle off the court in Thursday’s sectional title match with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory. Their No. 1 doubles duo of senior Tyce Dishman and Brandon Grubbs finished next with a 6-1, 6-0 result, and the No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Kiptyn Schwartz and freshman Easton Duckworth officially clinched the title with a 6-0, 6-3 result in their match.No. 1 and No. 2 singles took a bit more time as Burris senior Shashwat Sabapathy and junior Nolan Clark, respectively, claimed a few games in the second sets, but Delta sophomores Jackson Darby and Charlie Vannatter ultimately proved too much for the Owls to handle. Darby won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Vannatter wrapped up the shutout with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.”This whole season has been a very special season,” Delta coach Tim Cleland said. “This is an outstanding group, and we’re still ridiculously young. Tonight, we played one senior with four sophomores, a freshman and a junior. We gained some great experience last year, lost in the semi-state final in a 3-2 decision to second-ranked Homestead, and they ended up being state runners-up.”So we knew going into this season, we were very capable of playing with a lot of the state’s best teams.”The Eagles have proven they are one of the best with several victories over teams ranked in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association poll, including No. 13 Carroll (Fort Wayne), No. 16 Kokomo and No. 29 Cathedral. Ranked No. 6 itself, Delta’s only two losses have come against No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern and No. 5 South Bend St. Joseph. The Eagles will likely need to get through No. 11 Westfield to get back to the semi-state round, but Cleland is making sure his team stays focused on the task in front of them instead of looking ahead.”Just be where your feet are,” Cleland said. “Our feet are in the first round of regional right now, so that’s where our heads have to be. I’ve got a pretty level-headed group, and they play smart, high-percentage tennis, they’re coachable, they have all the things that they need to be successful, and we’re going to stay that way here in the postseason.”Jay County and New Castle claim fifth-straight sectional crownsElsewhere in Ea
