Milby High School senior receivers set example for Buffs football team

At Milby High School, the football team has been working.”People doubt us a lot”, senior wide receiver Isaiah Washington said. “So, I mean, when you go in doubt, you know, you’ve got to put that work in and show people what you about.”The goal this season is clear.”We want to go past the first round (in the playoffs),” senior defensive back Melvin Simeon said.To get the Buffs where they want to go, senior wide receivers Isaiah Washington and Artavion Davis will lead the way.”If they double his side, I’m open, and if they double my side, he’s open,” Washington said.Washington is big, strong, fast, and physical. When asked about his teammate Davis, Washington laughed and described him as “Tough receiver. I mean…laughter…He’s making me laugh.”Davis has jokes, but there’s nothing funny about him on the field.”Most I enjoy my football is the winning, the helping my team, the grit, the confidence of working hard of it”, Davis said. He’s the best receiver in the Houston area that you probably have never heard of.”He gets a lot of attention, but you would never know by the type of kid he is,” Milby head football coach Matthew Puente said. “You know, he just goes about his work every day, always getting in some extra work and things like that, and guys just kind of try to be like Tae.””I learned a lot by playing this sport,” Davis said. “I learned to never give up, keep going, even when it’s bad plays; it’s next play mentality.”The never-give-up, keep-going part is especially true for Davis. He broke his thumb in the first half of the first game of the season last year, but it never slowed him down.”To be honest, I really didn’t know about his thumb until about two weeks later”, junior quarterback Gabriel Gutierrez said. “He was just playing through it real well, I guess.”Davis finished the season with 1,602 yards, the most regular-season receiving yards in the state of Texas.”Yes, sir, I just like to stay humble and keep God first”, Davis said. “Me putting God first and not being too big-headed about it.”So as Milby enters the second half of the season, Washington and Davis will lead the way.”When those types of players are leading your team, it does well, especially for the young kids,” Coach Puente said. The two senior receivers are looking to make the playoffs and set a great example for the younger players on the team.
