The Northwestern Wildcats completely dominated the trenches, handing Penn State a humiliating 34-13 blowout at the newly renovated Ryan Field. For Campbell, the defeat was less about the final score and more about how his squad competed on the field. Speaking after the game, the first-year head coach did not hide his disappointment regarding his team’s total lack of fight.“The frustrating thing for me is the standard of what this program plays football with — the attitude, the effort, the toughness,” Campbell said. “We lacked in every way, shape and form in it.”Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)Penn State coach Matt Campbell on PSU’s 34-13 loss to Northwestern:“The frustrating thing for me is the standard of what this program plays football with — the attitude, the effort, the toughness. Northwestern ran wild over Penn State’s defense, racking up an astonishing 413 rushing yards while holding the Nittany Lions to a paltry 48 yards on the ground. Running back Caleb Komolafe spearheaded the Wildcats’ relentless attack, churning out a career-high 188 rushing yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, running back Joseph Himon II chipped in two rushing touchdowns as Northwestern consistently broke free for huge gains downfield.Penn State simply could not keep pace offensively. Quarterback Rocco Becht completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown, but he also threw two costly interceptions that killed potential scoring drives. The Nittany Lions finished with just 291 total yards of offense, converting only a fraction of their third downs while Northwestern controlled the clock. This defeat marks Penn State’s second consecutive Big Ten loss, dropping the team to a troubling 3-2 record on the season. Rebuilding a college program takes time, but Campbell knows fixing the culture must happen immediately. If the Nittany Lions hope to salvage their season, they must reclaim the identity and physical grit that Campbell expects before their next kickoff.Related: Northwestern HC David Braun’s ‘why not us?’ declaration will have Wildcats fans fired upRelated: Virginia Tech’s James Franklin reveals what he told John Love after missed kick vs. Pitt
