STARKVILLE, Miss. — We’ll find out next weekend if the Alabama football team, just 10 months removed from being spanked by Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, has what it takes to avenge the loss. But it’s clear already, at the very least, that it has an offensive line up to the task. That might sound a bit bold given that Georgia carried the nation’s third-ranked rushing defense, allowing 50.5 yards per game, into its win over Vanderbilt (the Commodores managed just 85 on the ground in a 38-14 loss). Goeorgia’s defensive front is always a difficult beast to tame. Linebacker Chris Cole is primed to be a first-round NFL draft pick next spring and was all over the field in Georgia’s rout of Oklahoma. But Alabama’s fifth consecutive win to begin the season, a 56-23 road romp of Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct. 3, drove home this certainty: the Crimson Tide’s offensive line is by far the most improved unit on the team, and it has both the physicality – and, more importantly, the cohesion – to give Georgia’s defense real trouble for the first time this season. Against MSU, new Alabama OL coach Adrian Klemm had another lineup shuffle to make (it wasn’t his first this season) in replacing starting right tackle Jayvin James. He inserted junior college transfer Tyrell Miller into the starting five, in a hostile, cowbell-clanging venue at Davis Wade Stadium, and the line barely missed a beat.GOODBREAD: Takeaway-fest for Alabama football’s ballhawk defenseREPORT CARD: Alabama football report card after dominant win over Mississippi StateAlabama opened the game from the old-school I-formation, of all things, with QB Keelon Russell under center. Daniel Hill took a carry up the middle for 6 yards, and by day’s end UA had averaged 4.8 per carry. Pass protection for Russell had a few hiccups, to be sure, but there is absolutely no comparison between last year’s maddeningly ineffective offensive line and this one, which has been maddening for opponents. Not to be forgotten, Alabama’s tight ends are contributing mightily to the rushing attack’s success, as well. The Crimson Tide has finally stopped the bleeding with a unit that has been on a relatively steady decline for the last five years − yes, even going back to legendary coach Nick Saban’s last couple of teams − with a patched-together group that is playing like it’s been together for years. Two new starters (Jackson Lloyd, William Sanders), two transfers (Racin Delgatty and James) and a guy who switched positions in Michael Carroll have blended like cowboy butter. Depth has shown up as well, both at tackle with Miller and at guard with Mal Waldrep, who was pressed into a starting role against Kentucky.Coach Kalen DeBoer’s most important offseason hire was Klemm, who is proving to be the best move DeBoer could have possibly made on an offensive coaching staff that underwent significant offseason change. The Bulldogs will challenge UA at every position, and it will take more than just a strong effo
