Nothing too pretty, but (still) perfect as Wild rally past Boston

   ​Early in the season, it doesn’t have to be flashy to be effective. As they continue to find their legs, the Minnesota Wild are winning, pretty or not.In their Saturday night home opener, the Wild overcame an early deficit and mounted a rally thanks to superlative special teams, beating the Bruins 4-1 at Grand Casino Arena.Minnesota got a stellar night in the net from goalie Jesper Wallstedt and his 26 saves, to go along with two goals from Kirill Kaprizov and one each by Quinn Hughes and Jared Spurgeon.The Wild are now 19-3-4 in franchise history in their home opener.Boston, which had played an overtime game one night earlier in Winnipeg, made the Wild look road-weary in the game’s first half-period. The Bruins took a lead less than two minutes after the National Anthem thanks in part to some scattershot play by Minnesota in its defensive zone.The Wild needed more than nine minutes to get a shot on goal, and ended the first trailing 1-0. Then special teams took over in the middle frame, first with the Wild killing Boston’s first power play to stay perfect on the penalty kill so far this season. Then when former Gophers standout Casey Mittelstadt went to the Boston penalty box, newcomer Max Shabanov fed Kaprizov for a top of the crease chip shot to tie the game.Two Bruins penalties in quick succession gave the Wild an extended two-man advantage midway through the game. Despite several good looks by Minnesota, the Bruins almost got back to full strength unscathed. But Hughes’ wrist shot through traffic with two seconds left on the penalty clock gave the Wild their first lead of the night.Early in the third, Spurgeon used Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov as a screen to score his first goal of the season, as fatigue began to be a factor for the visitors. Kaprizov shoveled a backhander into the empty net with 61 seconds remaining.Boston goalie Michael DiPietro finished with 26 saves for the Bruins, who will host Minnesota on Nov. 14.Up next, Minnesota is off on its first extended road trip of the season, visiting Buffalo on Tuesday, with a 6 p.m. CT opening faceoff.BrieflyAfter the entire Minnesota roster was introduced in the opening night pregame ceremony, the biggest ovation of the game may have come when long-time Wild defenseman Matt Dumba came out to lead the “Let’s Play Hockey” cheer. Dumba, 32, spent his first 10 NHL seasons in Minnesota and was a fan favorite on the ice and in the community.
