   ​As we turn the page on September and head into the back half of the fall season, athletes throughout the Eugene-Springfield area continue to deliver outstanding performances.Every week, you get to vote for The Register-Guard’s Athlete of the Week.Here are the nominees for this week’s boys Athlete of the Week based on performances from Sept. 24 through Oct. 2. The poll closes at 9 a.m. Thursday.Luke Bauer, Thurston cross-countryThurston junior Luke Bauer ran a personal-best 5,000-meter time of 16 minutes, 12.8 seconds and took 15th place Sept. 26 at Nike Portland XC. Bauer eclipsed his previous best time by nearly 38 seconds. Henry Light, South Eugene soccerSouth Eugene junior Henry Light scored a hat trick Sept. 29 to help the Axe to a 5-2 road win over West Albany. Ashenafi McKinnis, North Eugene cross-countryNorth Eugene senior Ashenafi McKinnis ran a 5,000 personal-best of 14:39.7 Sept. 26 to win Nike Portland XC. McKinnis’ time is the fourth-fastest in the state this season and ranks 23rd in the U.S. among high school boys. Khalil Sabzalian, South Eugene cross-countrySouth Eugene junior Khalil Sabzalian took 14th place with a 5,000 meter personal best of 14:54.0 Sept. 26 at the Nike Bob Firman Invitational.Sabzalian’s time is the seventh-fastest in the state this season, regardless of classification, and ranks second among Class 6A boys. Corbin Sage, Marist Catholic cross-countryMarist Catholic senior Corbin Sage clocked a 5,000 meter personal best of 14:55.2 and placed third Sept. 26 at Nike Portland XC.Sage’s time is the ninth-fastest in the state this season, regardless of classification, and is nearly half a minute faster than any other boy in Class 4A. Yosuke Shibata, South Eugene cross-countryIn his opening race of the season, South Eugene senior Yosuke Shibata ran a personal-best 5,000 meter time of 14:28.0 Sept. 26 to win the Nike Bob Firman Invitational. That’s the fastest time in the state this season, regardless of classification.Only three high school boys in the U.S. have clocked a faster time than Shibata this fall.Joel Yarber, Harrisburg cross-countryHarrisburg junior Joel Yarber ran a personal-best 5,000 time of 16:30.5 and took fifth place Sept. 25 at the Champs Invite. Yarber’s time cleared his previous best by nearly a minute. He owns the 10th-fastest time in the state among Class 3A boys.
