PETOSKEY — No matter where your focus was Friday night at Northmen Stadium in Petoskey, it was a tough night to miss Jace Shaw. You would have needed to be actively trying and, even that would’ve been hard. Shaw, a senior do-everything player for Petoskey, could be seen blowing up plays defensively in the Gaylord backfield during a 42-21 rout of the Blue Devils. He could be seen sprinting away from the Gaylord defense, including on a 57-yarder he caught in stride and raced down to the four-yard-line. There were his special teams plays, going perfect on extra points, booming punts and even grabbing a Gaylord onside kick attempt. Thought you’d get a break of Shaw during halftime? Think again. Shaw’s head at halftime ditched the helmet for the Petoskey Homecoming King crown. “This is what every high school guy dreams about,” Shaw said with a laugh after Friday’s busy night. Shaw being able to do everything on the field comes as really no surprise. He’s been a key cog in the defense and special teams for multiple years now. Every early morning with Lukas (Nemec) and everything with the team, it’s great to feel that,” Shaw said as he pointed to the final scoreboard. On defense, Shaw contributed eight tackles, three for a loss and shut down Blue Devil drives with two sacks. Every person now on the line is a threat. That leaves room for Braden and our linebackers to make plays. You could see that today, with Braden having a couple sacks and an interception.”On offense, he caught three passes for 104 yards, which included plays of 40 and 57. It was an extended look on offense for Shaw, who wanted to contribute more on that side of the ball. He had a talk with coaches about getting involved more in the passing game as a tight end.
