Horwitz has had a strong season for the Pirates as the club’s primary first baseman. The 28-year-old carries a .280/.386/.455 batting line with 11 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs and 33 RBI in 71 games.
Ryan O’Hearn is playing first base for the Pirates against the Mariners on Thursday afternoon.
To take Horwitz’s place on the active roster, infielder Jack Brannigan is being recalled from Double-A Altoona.
Brannigan, who was added the 40-man roster in the offseason, has appeared in 31 games for Altoona this season and has slashed .235/.333/.522 with seven doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 18 RBI. It was a delayed start to the year for Brannigan, who broke his nose during spring training.
