Donley keen to add goals after encouraging NI run

After a four-game window with plenty of positives for Northern Ireland, there was perhaps just one lingering concern – their ability to score goals consistently.Tottenham Hotspur’s Jamie Donley started as a lone striker throughout the quartet of Nations League fixtures, even though the 21-year-old has stated he feels his more natural position is number 10.Despite impressing with his ability to push Northern Ireland up the field, drop into space, frustrate the opposition and, as a result, win plenty of free-kicks, he failed to add to his two international goals across the window where his side won twice but were frustrated in a pair of goalless home draws.Spearheading the attack for a young side who have already proven they are hard to break down at the other end, Donley’s failure to score despite playing 294 minutes across the four games will be cause for concern.”I’ve enjoyed it, playing all four games,” said the player on loan at Luton Town.”I’m obviously a little bit disappointed not to score. I think that’s my aim role as a striker, but I think Michael [O’Neill] likes me to link the ball up and help with the build-up plays.”Hopefully, I can add some goals to my game.”NI make huge strides despite Georgia frustrationPrice misses penalty as Northern Ireland held by GeorgiaDonley is still growing on the international stage and has shown plenty of promising signs, especially in his build-up play.Comfortable receiving the ball, he has combined well with the midfielders and, given his deeper role at club level, is confident when dropping back between the lines. However, any striker ultimately will be judged by getting into goalscoring positions and taking the chances, especially when, for all their good work, Northern Ireland twice failed to find the net at home in the space of a week.During Northern Ireland’s draw at home against Hungary, Donley had multiple chances to break the deadlock but could not connect with Shea Charles’ pass before being denied by stopper Balazs Toth after he headed Ethan Galbraith’s pass towards goal.Against Georgia on Monday night, he barely had a sniff at goal and frustratingly for the side’s designated penalty taker, was already off the pitch by the time his side were awarded a spot-kick subsequently missed by Isaac Price.’Jamie makes us better as a team’Price remains the side’s biggest goal threat playing in an advanced role from the left and finding an out-and-out nine has been a problem position for some time, arguably since Kyle Lafferty faded from the international scene.O’Neill has consistently backed Donley, who he convinced to switch his international allegiance from England to the country of his birth last year. With one goal in five appearances for the Hatters this season, to go with goals against Luxembourg and Wales in international football, Donley is not expected to be prolific but O’Neill values what he brings elsewhere.”I’m not sure I’d say it’s a thankless task, he’s a number nine and that’s what a singl
