TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL/KMSS) – Liberty-Eylau is coming off its bye week, after a 1-4 pre-district start to the season. The Leopards competed with Pittsburg and Pleasant Grove, shutting out DeKalb, but in the final two weeks leading up to the bye, Liberty-Eylau suffered two steep losses to Jefferson and Newton.”We felt it pregame as coaches. When we went out pregame I said prove me wrong because I don’t think we’re ready to play,” head coach Brad Willard said. “I think it was just the mentality we had going into the week so it was pretty easy to fix but we also had plenty of kids that played great football that night. So yes we did have a little come to Jesus moment or two but they answered.”The Leopards used the bye week to get back on track. After experimenting with other player personnel in the pre-district, Liberty-Eylau decided to go back to junior quarterback Huntley Fisher. Fisher has almost 900 yards on the season and has thrown for eight touchdowns.”He responded exactly as he thought he would. He’s competitive so obviously it hurt him, but he didn’t sulk. He practiced that day, just like I thought he would react,” Willard said. “Came into both games and was ready mentally because of the reps he got in practice and how he took advantage of them. He’s a leader on this team as well, and we’re excited to get into district.”This week Liberty-Eylau opens district play as White Oak comes to town. At half time, the state championship team of 2006 will be honored and recognized for its 20th anniversary. The team included several MLB and NFL players, including pitcher Will Middlebrooks and running back LaMichael James. Leopard baseball coach Zach Fowler and assistant principal Ricky Rushing were members of the team as well. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at Harris FieldCopyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
