Steve Sarkisian hints QB Arch Manning returning to Texas after season

Stop me if you have heard this one before, but Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian is stirring the pot, yet again.
Sarkisian is a lightning rod in college football, and everything that he says is calculated and never an accident. His statements from Monday on Kay Adams’ show, Up and Adams, definitely shook things up. Adams asked Sarkisian about his quarterback, Arch Manning, and if there is a legit and realistic chance that Manning could come back after his junior year.

His answer was, “We haven’t had the discussion, but I will tell you, I would not be surprised. I think Arch really loves college football. He loves the University of Texas, and he does pretty well through NIL… by the same token, I won’t be surprised if he declares to go to the draft.”
This era of college football presents this exact scenario on a regular basis. It was evident last year when Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore was slated to become a New York Jet, and instead, he decided to return to Oregon for another season. That decision wasn’t all that hard to make, as he is scheduled to make about $10 million in Eugene this year. Manning would be in the same boat.
All of this boils down to Manning being at least a little bit in control of where he wants to go. If, when the season comes to an end, and there is a team with the first overall pick that is not a place where the Mannings want to go, then he can just go back to Texas for one more year, and life will be just fine.

Could that team be the Cleveland Browns? Absolutely. There is nothing to say that Manning would want to come to a team like the Browns to be a part of a turnaround. Both of his uncles did something similar.
Eli’s draft night move is a little more famous than what Peyton did after his Junior year. The Jets had the number one overall pick when it was Peyton’s turn to come out, so he decided to go back for one more year.
Eli’s draft night move is one of the most famous ever. After being selected by the San Diego Chargers as the number one pick and basically said that he will not play for them under any circumstances.
The Mannings see the big picture, and if they don’t like what they are seeing, they have no shame in calling their shots.

Sarkisian’s comments this week were the first hint at that for Arch, and this is now a story that will last the entire year long. Cleveland will be at the center of the conversation.
