New IOC fund will offer Olympic athletes, including golfers, $10,000 stipends

Every golfer who qualifies for the 2028 Summer Olympics will be the beneficiary of a $10,000 grant from the International Olympic Committee.
Under a new policy that will actually retroactively pay athletes from the 2026 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee has established a $140 million fund for each four-year cycle, allowing them to cover expenses incurred during training and travel.

The money is available for all athletes, who can apply for the grant within six months of the end of competition, regardless of performance. A couple of caveats: the athletes cannot have tested positive for doping or otherwise violate the Olympic charter.

The next Olympics are the Summer Games in Los Angeles, and the men’s and women’s golf competitions will be at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
IOC president Kirsty Coventry announced the initiative at the organization’s annual strategy meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24, one year after she took office.

“We found a way to directly support all Olympians, and that is a priority,” Coventry said. “I think part of what we do in this movement is we pave the way forward for those that are coming behind us.”
“We’re showing the athletes that we are thinking of them and that we’re going above and beyond to make sure that they’re receiving as much value as we can give them,” said former NBA star Pau Gasol, chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. “They are the heart of our movement.”
Some countries pay their athletes prize money for winning medals. The IOC’s fund will be for anyone who applies. If an athlete chooses not to apply, that money will remain in the fund to be available for other Olympians.
The grant will be available even to athletes in sports such as golf, men’s soccer and basketball, where athletes tend to already make a lot of money.
