WESTFIELD — With the game tied 1-1, senior Hailey McDaniel received the soccer ball at her feet and surveyed the sea of defenders clogging the box before she unleashed a long-range strike. Her moon shot rose over the Carmel goalkeeper and landed into the net with about 23 minutes left in the sectional semifinal.Breaking the deadlock, McDaniel – who entered the postseason with one goal – delivered the winning strike in Westfield’s 2-1 over Carmel (11-3-1) on Wednesday.“Right as Adriana (Benitez) set it back to me, I knew I just had to hit it,” McDaniel said. “There were defenders in the box so I knew it had to just be a one-touch shot and I just hoped it would go in and it did.”The Rocks were on a revenge tour. They suffered a 2-1 double overtime loss to Carmel during last season’s sectional championship. Westfield, the host of this season’s sectional, were foaming at the mouth for a win – still reeling from the heartache they suffered in 2025.“These girls remembered what happened to us,” said Westfield coach Rachel Fulkerson. “We got scored on with two minutes left in the second overtime and they carried that feeling. We’ve been talking about how we want to walk off feeling different. We want to walk off showing our strength in that.”In the second meeting between the two teams this season, coming after a 1-1 draw on Sept. 28. The Rocks glowed with winning aura on Wednesday – vanquishing the 2025 state runner-up Greyhounds from the postseason. After defense won out over offense in the first half on Wednesday, the Rocks got on the board first about two minutes into the second period. Senior Kylie Ipsen swung in a corner kick that bounced from Addie Colling’s head to the dome of Missouri commit Avery Van Den Berg for a double-header finish.“I was a little bit (surprised) because I didn’t think the ball was going to come from Addie to me, but I just put my head up there and kind of prayed and closed my eyes,” Van Den Berg said.About three minutes later, after a scramble ensued after a corner kick, Carmel junior Caroline Mosher got an open look outside the crowded box and hit the equalizer. The draw lasted about 15 minutes before McDaniel snapped on her cape and delivered her heroics at home. She scored just her second goal of the year, but she wanted to make her scoring instinct known, unwilling to let Carmel send her team packing for the second year in a row. “Hailey is kind of a silent assassin,” Fulkerson said. “She sneaks into places … she’s someone that weaves in and out of spaces and can get these quick shots off and that was a quick trigger. She took advantage.”The fans that packed the fans at Westfield, including the kids that wore Indy Eleven soccer kits, saw what they came for: dueling titans in Indiana high school soccer playing under elimination pressure.Westfield didn’t let Class 3A fourth-ranked Carmel earn bragging rights on its home field.
