From the department of, “this hasn’t happened already?”: Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and the greatest women’s tennis player of the modern era, has a signature Barbie — for the sport she dominated.Mattel, Inc., which owns the Barbie franchise, announced Thursday that the doll, based on Williams’ 2005 Australian Open title win, would be released immediately. It echoes her look from the tournament where she won her seventh major, featuring the green-and-white colorway that looked like something that a superhero might wear.It is Williams’ second Barbie of 2026. The first, released in March to mark International Women’s Day, saw the 45-year-old’s likeness in a suit, focusing on her career as an investor and entrepreneur since she had “evolved away” from tennis in 2022.“Growing up, I didn’t see many girls who looked like me being told there was no limit to who they could become. I want every girl who plays with this doll to see possibility —not just in me, but in herself. She can dream big, work hard, change direction, break barriers, and become anything she chooses,” Williams said in a release Thursday.“That’s what makes having my own Barbie so meaningful to me.”The new doll carries a retail price of $45. That includes a racket and ball.Williams returned to tennis this season, playing singles at Wimbledon and doubles with a variety of partners across a few tournaments. Most notably, she reunited with Venus Williams, her sister and the seven-time Grand Slam champion — who already had two Barbies of her own.Serena lost her Wimbledon singles match to Maya Joint of Australia, and picked up a knee injury that ruled her and Venus out of the doubles there. But they teamed up at the U.S. Open, again encountering Joint, who played with Chan Hao-ching of Taiwan. The sisters lost a gripping three-setter that went to a match tiebreak.Earlier this year, Williams received the inaugural “Barbie Dream Fest Icon” award. The award “honors leaders, creators, and change makers who embody the spirit of possibility,” according to the company. At the time, Williams was training for her return to the court, which started at Queen’s, the Wimbledon warmup held in London. She has not made any clear declarations about her plans for 2027.Other tennis stars to receive Barbies include Naomi Osaka, Ash Barty and Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Numerous athletes have been immortalized as Barbie or Ken dolls, recent examples including the WNBA’s Angel Reese, rugby star Ilona Maher and LeBron James. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Sports Business, Culture, Tennis, Memorabilia & Collectibles, Women’s Tennis2026 The Athletic Media Company
