Rees-Zammit has scored four tries – two in each of the Bears’ first two Prem matches this season – the most of any player in the league.Against Northampton last week his performance included five line breaks, 81 metres and a 50:22 kick, while he was denied a hat-trick in the closing stages as Tommy Freeman’s deliberate knock-on saw a penalty try awarded instead.”He’s in such a great place mentally and he’s got a smile on his face, he’s enjoying the boys and the enjoying the way we’re playing and what we’re trying to do,” Lam said. The Welshman, along with some of the other backs in the team, has been doing additional work following training with defence coach Jordan Crane on tackle technique, Lam added, which is also showing on the pitch.”Yes, we see the finish stuff but when he took the ball on the counter and he’s banging physically into contact, he’s cleaning out – I just complemented him at training, in the wide breakdown the other team was trying to counter ruck [and] he got right under low and drove back at them,” he added.”There’s a lot of stuff that I value and us as coaches value that he’s also doing.”Salty celebrations, questionable signings and Test bolters – Prem talking pointsLeicester and Gloucester make changes for Slater CupDeacon aims for a ‘tougher, harder’ GloucesterRees-Zammit is now in his second season with Bristol and has returned to his former position on the wing after spending much of 2025-26 at full-back for club and country. He has previously said it took him time to adjust back to the sport after almost two years away playing American football, while Lam said that the 25-year-old has now settled more into the team environment which is showing on the pitch. “He’s got really good mates now and that takes time for everybody,” Lam said.”He’s enjoying the way that the guys are and it’s good to see him with a smile on his face and at the top of his game.”Lam also backed Rees-Zammit to “feature strongly” for his country over the next year after he was dropped to the bench for their Nations Championship match against Argentina in the summer. “Even talking to Steve Tandy he’s buzzing at where Louis is,” Lam added.”What I do know is that he’s going to feature strongly and he’s in a really good confident space”The biggest thing is he’s doing the work and he’s another example of what I said about the whole group – they’re getting evidence of the work that they’re putting in.”
