Friday’s Hurricane Isaias-impacted Southwestern Athletic Conference football game ended with Florida A&M playing spoiler in Montgomery.It was a rainy and unhappy homecoming for the Alabama State Hornets as the Rattlers marched in and won a 28-27 thriller.After taking a 14-10 halftime lead, the Rattlers allowed 17 unanswered Alabama State points in the third quarter, including two touchdowns within 50 seconds of each other. When the Rattlers looked up at the scoreboard, they were down 27-14 entering the fourth quarter.But back-to-back touchdown throws from freshman quarterback Armond Parker to wide receiver Armand Burris earned the Rattlers the win. The first was an 88-yarder, and the second went for 89. FAMU took a one-point lead as Parker connected with a wide-open receiver, Tamez Young, for the two-point conversion.The Rattlers’ defense then had three straight stops: a forced fumble, a turnover on downs, and finally a blocked 47-yard field goal attempt by FAMU transfer and current Hornet kicker Andrew Abu-Akel. Cornerback Isiah Davis was credited with the block.Parker finished Friday 13-for-20, 290 yards, three touchdowns passing, and one rushing, against two interceptions. Burris had four catches for 216 yards and two scores.Altogether, FAMU outgained Alabama State 386-381 before the homecoming crowd of 16,994 at ASU Stadium.FAMU football QB Armond Parker makes mistakes, then explodes vs Alabama StateIt was an up-and-down performance from the freshman Parker under center.He got off to a strong start, including scoring the game’s first offensive touchdown on a designed run play for 36 yards. Before halftime, Parker floated a 19-yard touchdown pass to running back Jamal Hailey to the Rattlers to take a 14-10 lead to the locker room.But the second half began disastrously. He tossed back-to-back interceptions, including a 55-yard pick-six by Omari Russell after throwing a duck intended for tight end Xavier Hernond. Parker’s second interception to Alabama State cornerback Zion Crawford, intended for Burris, also ended in an offensive score for the Hornets after the short field.But the Parker-Burris connection ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in FAMU’s win over Alabama State.On the ground, FAMU’s run game was better, but still not all-world. The Rattlers had 96 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Parker led with 49 yards and his touchdown, and Hailey had 12 carries and 44 yards.FAMU entered the game with the SWAC’s and Football Championship Subdivision’s worst statistical rushing attack.FAMU football has a run defense problem, but made key stopsThe Rattlers still struggle to stop the run.The Hornets picked up 267 rushing yards, led by running back Jamarie Hostzclaw, picking up 128 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.But the unit stopped it when it mattered most, punching the football out of Hostzclaw’s hands to secure the clutch victory. It followed a drive where the Rattlers forced a turnover on downs by stopping Alabama State quarterback
