Five-star point guard Jezelle “GG” Banks, the No. 4 overall player in the Class of 2027, has committed to South Carolina women’s basketball. She chose coach Dawn Staley’s program over Texas and LSU, marking the fourth straight year Staley has secured a recruit ranked in the top six by ESPN. She announced her decision on Oct. 10.Banks took her official visit the weekend of Sept. 19, along with two other recruits from the 2027 class in Jordyn Palmer (No. 8 overall) and Taylor Brown (No. 30). Brown just also committed to the Gamecocks on Oct. 3.Banks, 5-foot-10 is from Wilmington, Delaware, and was the 2024-25 Gatorade Delaware Girls Basketball Player of the Year after averaging 21.7 points and 4.8 assists as a sophomore. As a junior, she averaged 14.3 points and 5.4 assists.Staley saw Banks play in last December at the She Got Game Classic in Washington, D.C. and most recently on Oct. 4 but first gave her an offer in July 2023. At 2026 WNBA All-Star weekend, Banks was part of the Shooting Stars contest that featured four teams made up of current and former WNBA players along with Nike EYBL players like Banks. She hit back-to-back deep 3-pointers in highlight-worthy fashion, playing in the contest on a team with some WNBA legends. What does GG Banks commitment mean for Taylor Brown?Banks and Brown, a 5-6 point guard, used to play at Ursuline Academy in Delaware but are both now at different schools. Banks goes to St. James Performance Academy in Washington D.C. and Brown is at Long Island Lutheran in New York. Both play point guard, a position Staley needs and doesn’t have this year after Raven Johnson graduated into the WNBA and Maddy McDaniel left the team. With Brown also at South Carolina, Banks can easily shift over to a more scoring guard role, especially with 3-point star Tessa Johnson off to the WNBA in 2027. That’s not to say Banks wouldn’t thrive at the one spot with the Gamecocks but Staley can use Brown, whose game is more traditional point guard, at that spot and push Banks, who is a bit flashier and taller, to the wing.Banks can play off the ball so there is some flexibility with this addition even if it looks like she fills the point guard vacancy.Lulu Kesin covers South Carolina athletics for The Greenville News and the USA TODAY Network.
