AI Is More Than a Single Sponsorship CategoryBayern Munich signed two AI partners in less than a calendar month this past summer. Alphabet’s (Nasdaq: GOOG) Gemini became the club’s Official Consumer AI Partner on August 10. Wonderful was named its Official Enterprise AI Partner on September 9.The Google deal positions Gemini as a “personal expert right in fans’ pockets”, alongside Pixel, the team’s Official Smartphone Partner.Wonderful’s partnership is, by contrast, focused on internal operational applications. The firm is embedding its technology into Bayern’s existing systems, beginning with an AI assistant that handles ticketing and account inquiries. The two pacts make it clear that AI is more than a single sponsorship category. The question is just how partners can coexist before their deals begin to cannibalize one another?SeatGeek Introduces TourIQTourIQ is the newest product from SeatGeekIQ, SeatGeek’s marketplace intelligence engine, which already powers pricing and demand decisions for many of the largest names in sports and entertainment. TourIQ is a transformative predictive intelligence product built for the people who book and price live shows. Focusing on both valuation and scaling, it tells a promoter or venue what a concert or third party event is worth at any building, for any artist, on any date, before a single ticket is sold, then generates a price for every seat in the house so the show opens with the right scaling from day one.Interested in learning more? However, the speed at which the club executed its two deals stands out. Category splits usually take years. For context, the NFL named Caesars its Official Casino Partner (sans sports betting rights) in January 2019. It wasn’t until April 2021 that the league named DraftKings and FanDuel its first Official Sportsbook Partners, keeping DraftKings’ daily fantasy sports rights separate.AI technology barely existed 18 months ago. That one of Europe’s biggest clubs carved up the category before a U.S. property did is notable too. Leagues on this side of the Atlantic tend to be more aggressive monetizing commercial rights and the bulk of large AI companies are American. The differentiated way the two partnerships were sold is also notable.A rights owner selling sponsorships to brands in adjacent alcohol categories is selling reach to both. Google likely received a variation of that same pitch, built around the fan-facing brand exposure Gemini sought.Wonderful, however, was looking to supply B2B infrastructure for club operations. Bayern would have needed to present a business case more akin to the “business-backed sponsorships” we covered in April to appeal to the Enterprise AI provider.Rights o
