Man United chiefs admit transfer window shortcomings after tough start to the seasonSenior figures at Manchester United believe that the club failed to meet expectations during the transfer window, according to The Sun.The Red Devils have had a disappointing start to the season, winning just one of their opening six games. It’s their worst start to a season in four decades, and it has placed their recruitment strategy firmly under the spotlight. To make matters worse, they’ve also been knocked out of the EFL Cup following a 3-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round. The Seagulls became the first team to beat United at Old Trafford after trailing by two goals since September 1976.United manager Michael Carrick is increasingly under pressure. The supporters booed the Red Devils on three separate occasions during the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. The visitors started the game at the bottom of the table and have been the Premier League’s whipping boys so far this season.Yet, United couldn’t take advantage, drawing considerable ire from the home support. The club’s leadership has now taken some responsibility for the team’s awful start to the season, making it clear they’re unhappy with the second stage of their squad rebuild. After spending around £255 million to bring in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens, United forked out another £155m to reinforce their squad over the summer. They signed Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Carlos Baleba, with the latter making his debut in the disappointing draw against Tottenham. However, club insiders have admitted that Tielemans and Santos were not among their initial targets.United had initially shortlisted Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Ederson to strengthen their midfield but missed out on all of them.Tottenham signed Fernandes before adding Sandro Tonali in a £100 million deal, while Anderson had already decided to join Manchester City months before his move was completed in July.United eventually turned to Tielemans after their proposed £35m move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson collapsed following medical checks that reportedly identified a serious knee issue.Tielemans have started all eight of United’s matches so far, while Santos has played just 16 minutes of Premier League football despite costing the club £50m.
