What the Tigers can learn from Milwaukee’s offense this October

The Tigers should be paying attention to how Milwaukee is making the Dodgers work this October. The Brewers have received contributions throughout their lineup, and their approach offers something worth considering as Detroit evaluates how to improve its offense for next season.Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series with a 7-4 victory Monday. William Contreras finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto lasted just 2⅔ innings. The Brewers collected 12 hits and continued adding runs after Los Angeles went to its bullpen. One of the most important plate appearances came from Jake Bauers in the third inning. He worked a 12-pitch walk against Yamamoto with two outs, loading the bases for Christian Yelich, who followed with a two-run single. Bauers extended an inning that was one out from ending and gave another hitter an opportunity to change the score. That sequence provides a useful starting point for Detroit’s offseason discussion. Adding an impact hitter should remain part of the conversation, but the Tigers also need to consider what the rest of the lineup contributes around that player. A dangerous middle of the order becomes more productive when the hitters ahead of it consistently reach base.Milwaukee’s regular-season results give that approach more substance than a single October rally. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Brewers finished second in runs despite ranking near the bottom in home runs, leading the majors with a .341 on-base percentage. Their ability to create opportunities was an established strength before this series began. There is a distinction between patience and passivity, and it matters when discussing what Detroit could take from Milwaukee. Working a count has value when a hitter can recognize pitches outside the zone, protect against difficult strikes and still attack something worth driving. Simply watching hittable pitches pass does little to help an offense.Bauers’ plate appearance illustrated how those skills can work together. The walk was the result, but surviving long enough to earn it required more than keeping the bat on his shoulder. That is a useful reminder when evaluating hitters whose contributions extend beyond their home run totals.Power still has an important place in this discussion. Contreras tied Monday’s game with a fifth-inning homer before delivering the go-ahead single in the sixth, providing two different ways to bring Milwaukee back. The Brewers benefited from both, and Detroit should be looking for that same range of offensive production. For the Tigers, that means weighing on-base ability alongside damage when considering additions. How often does a hitter chase? Can he make enough contact to use his strike-zone judgment? Does his production hold up against the pitchers he would regularly face in his expected role? Those questions help determine whether an acquisition improves the lineup beyond the occasions when he homers. The s
