FIFA has declined to prevent supporters from carrying rainbow flags into Seattle Stadium for Friday’s World Cup match between Iran and Egypt, despite opposition from both national team federations.
Friday’s critical World Cup fixture aligns with Seattle’s yearly LGBTQ+ community celebration, creating a contentious Pride match featuring two countries that reject same-sex relationships. It may trigger additional grievances from Iran, after the head coach claimed the nation was the “most oppressed” at the tournament.

Before the match, Iran has been permitted to arrive in Seattle ahead of schedule after threatening to file a complaint with FIFA regarding unjust travel limitations. While the Department of Homeland Security has facilitated Iran’s logistics, both countries have been disregarded by FIFA concerning the Pride celebration, as per The Mirror US.

Iran and Egypt have each requested exemption from Seattle’s Pride festivities, among the most prominent in the nation. Nevertheless, according to The Telegraph, FIFA has declared it will not prohibit supporters from bringing Pride flags into the venue.
The pivotal Group G encounter is set for 11 pm ET on Friday, with the victor progressing to the knockout stages. Yet federations from both countries have denounced the potential Pride celebrations surrounding the World Cup fixture.

The president of Iran’s football federation (FFIRI), Mehdi Taj, opposed the annual Pride festivities, with same-sex partners at risk of facing the death penalty in Iran. Egypt similarly condemned the celebrations.
Same-sex partners also face persecution in Egypt, and the football association contacted FIFA to state it rejects “any activities related to supporting homosexuality during the match.” However, FIFA’s authority has its limits.
The Pride festivities are arranged by the city of Seattle, meaning FIFA only oversees what occurs within the stadium. Nevertheless, FIFA doesn’t intend to limit expression and free speech, instead demonstrating solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 is an inclusive event that welcomes people from all backgrounds. Fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome at matches and events,” a FIFA Spokesperson said.
“General statements of human rights, including rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity, are permitted under the FIFA World Cup 2026 Stadium Code of Conduct and may be displayed inside stadiums provided they are used in a manner consistent with the code.”
Beyond FIFA’s position, state senator Jamie Pedersen argued that a Pride celebration featuring two countries that reject LGBTQ+ individuals will send a compelling message. “If you tried to import a pride celebration into Egypt or Iran, obviously that could be a disaster,” he said.
“But in a community like Seattle that prides itself on welcoming people from all over, I just can’t imagine that it’s going to be a significant problem.” While the festivities are set to proceed, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is bracing herself for some pushback.

“We are very much expecting and prepared for protest activity… which is why we have many designated protest zones in the stadium area, and our law enforcement is very prepared to deal with that,” she said.
