Los Angeles Angels infielder Nick Madrigal cleared waivers on Thursday, and elected to enter free agency rather than returning to Triple-A.
The Angels designated Madrigal for assignment Monday after Jorge Soler returning from the 10-day injured list following a left oblique strain. Madrigal has accrued enough MLB service time during his six MLB seasons to refuse the Angels’ decision to outright him to Triple-A, and he exercised his ability to do so Thursday.

Madrigal came up to MLB towards the end of May after signing a minor league deal with the Halos during the offseason, and stuck with the team for just under a month before his designation for assignment. He played in 15 games for the Angels, amassing 44 at-bats and recording 12 hits. Madrigal had a .273/.385/.295 slash line for a .680 OPS over the course of his stay in Anaheim.
He struck out just three times across his 44 at-bats, and walked seven times during his time in MLB. Only one of his hits went for extra bases in the majors.
The 29-year-old featured for the Angels at second and third base, but the returns of Denzer Guzman and Christian Moore to the majors pushed him further down the depth chart and limited his playing time in MLB. He can still re-sign with the Angels on another minor league deal if he chooses.

While the Angels are losing a little bit of depth with Madrigal on the way out, they have more than enough players to fill the infield.
The Angels have Oswalde Peraza, Vaughn Grissom, Donovan Walton and Moore to play second base still, and can also field those four at third base along with Guzman. Their current concern when it comes to changing their roster should come in the outfield.
Mike Trout is out with injury at the moment, and with Jose Siri out on paternal leave, the Angels’ choices in the outfield are slim. The Angels will hope Siri can return before their next game, which comes at home against the Athletics on Friday at 6:38 p.m. PT. The Angels haven’t had the best record against the A’s this season, though managed to take two from their division rivals in a four game set last week.
