Julian Nagelsmann played all of his starters to strengthen the team’s chemistry but Germany went the opposite direction. Ecuador’s physicality shut down momentum all over the pitch and Germany only built up fatigue with a quick four-day turnaround before the knockout round. The exception was the pairing of Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rüdiger.
Jamal Musiala played his first 90-minute competitive match since March, enduring a variety of challenges on his way to drawing five fouls. This bodes well for his upcoming Bayern season but probably not for his World Cup campaign.
Germany had nothing to gain from this match but hopefully this defeat serves as a wake-up call. There are drastic changes needed in effort, creativity, and overall quality.
Thanks for joining us! Germany will head to Boston for a knockout match in the Round of 32 on Monday, June 29th. The opponent is currently unknown but it will be a third-place team from either Group A, B, C, D, or F.

75′: Substitution. Pascal Groß replaces Florian Wirtz.
71′: Substitution. Pervis Estupiñán replaces Piero Hincapié.
69′: Hydration break!

64′: Substitutions. Ángelo Preciado and Kevin Rodriguez replace Enner Valencia and Alan Franco.
60′: Substitutions. Deniz Undav and Malick Thiaw replace Kai Havertz and Joshua Kimmich. Kimmich hands the captain’s armband to Antonio Rüdiger.
50′: Yellow card. Alan Franco is booked for delay of game after throwing a second ball onto the pitch to delay Germany’s throw-in.
46′: Kai Havertz earns a penalty kick in the box but the call is overturned by VAR based on a foul by Leroy Sané in the buildup.
46′: Substitution. Angelo Stiller replaces Aleksandar Pavlović.
I’m still not sure how Aleksandar Pavlović was allowed to kick somebody in the face, even if he got the ball first. Most of the non-calls this month have prevented goals rather than creating them. Maybe it’s just the law of averages?
Jamal Musiala continues to get easily muscled off the ball with CONCACAF-style challenges. World Cup referees have swallowed their whistles this tournament and finesse players like Musiala have struggled mightily.
Besides Leroy Sané’s goal, Ecuador has done a solid job closing down players on the ball and clogging passing lanes. The Ecuadorians are fighting for their World Cup survival and have not backed down against the group leader.
Germany conceded for the ninth consecutive World Cup match, dating back to the 2014 final when Manuel Neuer kept a 1-0 shutout against Lionel Messi’s Argentina side for 120 minutes. Neuer has only held four clean sheets in his last 19 appearances for Germany.
HT: Germany tied 1-1 at the break.
45′: Four minutes of stoppage time.
44′: Yellow card. Aleksandar Pavlović is booked for clipping Enner Valencia from behind.
43′: Yellow card. Piero Hincapié is booked for dragging down Leroy Sané from behind.
27′: Hydration break! Go grab a cold beverage from the fridge and do some light stretches.
9′: Goal, Ecuador. Germany tied 1-1. A cheap turnover from Felix Nmecha leads to an outside shot from Nilson Angulo. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović failed to close down quickly enough.
2′: GOOOAAALLL! Germany up 1-0. Leroy Sané scores quickly on an assist from Florian Wirtz. Aleksandar Pavlović clearly kicked an Ecuador player in the face but VAR did not overturn the call.
1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
In a meaningless third group stage match, Julian Nagelsmann is rolling with his top players. David Raum will fill in for Nathaniel Brown, who is being held out as a precaution due to an adductor injury. Antonio Rudiger will replace the injured Nico Schlotterbeck as Jonathan Tah’s wingman for the rest of the tournament.
After a dominating 7-1 win over Curaçao to open the 2026 World Cup, Germany needed some second half heroics from Deniz Undav and the rest of the substitutes to overtake Ivory Coast with a 2-1 victory. Instead of fighting for a spot in the knockout round during the third and final group stage match, Germany has the luxury of resting the starters against Ecuador because Germany has already clinched first place in Group E. This is the first time Germany has advanced to the knockout rounds since winning the World Cup in 2014.
Ecuador will desperately need points to stay alive. They have been scoreless in both matches thus far, losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast and gutting out a 0-0 draw with Curaçao. While it’s mathematically possible (for now) that Ecuador can still reach the Round of 32 with a single point, they would be in a much stronger position with an upset win over Germany.
Germany wins 3-1. Ecuador’s struggles in the attacking third will continue against Germany. Germany’s normal reserves will receive some well deserved playing time and leave a lasting impression with a dominating 2-0 lead at halftime. Ecuador will score their first and last goal of the 2026 World Cup before conceding a breakaway goal in the dying minutes as they throw numbers forward while hoping to secure a draw.
