At least, that was the plan following his disappointing second-round defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at the Shanghai Masters. A week later, however, the Serbian has apparently changed his mind.He has accepted a wild card into the Swiss Indoors Basel, returning to a tournament he has not played since 2011. For a 39-year-old who has spent much of the past two seasons carefully managing his schedule, adding an ATP 500 tournament this late in the year is an interesting decision. Particularly when it comes immediately before the Paris Masters. So what changed? How To Read Djokovic’s Basel Wild CardThe Race to Turin Has ChangedThe most obvious explanation is the ATP Finals. Djokovic is currently No. 11 in the Live Race with 2,840 points, having slipped behind several competitors during the Asian swing. Rafael Jodar’s remarkable run to the Shanghai final has been really damaging. The Spaniard now sits in ninth place with 3,159 points, giving him a 319-point advantage over Djokovic. With Jannik Sinner out with injury, ninth place effectively becomes the final qualification spot. That makes Basel considerably more important than it might otherwise appear. An ATP 500 title would give Djokovic 500 points, potentially moving him ahead of Jodar’s current total. Even reaching the final, worth 330 points, would theoretically be enough to close that particular gap, assuming the full points count towards his Race total. Of course, Jodar and the other contenders will also be competing. But Djokovic has clearly recognized that relying entirely on Paris might be unnecessarily risky. There is another important detail. The Serbian had originally been scheduled to participate in the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia this October. That event has since been postponed until December. The change leaves his schedule more flexible, although there is no confirmation that it directly influenced his Basel decision. Either way, the opportunity to collect actual ranking points rather than participate in an exhibition makes considerable sense. And after missing the ATP Finals in both 2024 and 2025, Djokovic now has a realistic opportunity to return to Turin. A 19th appearance would also establish a standalone record for ATP Finals qualifications.Basel Offers More Than Just Ranking PointsAnother way to interpret the decision: Perhaps Djokovic simply wants to keep winning. His recent Beijing title was the 102nd of his career, leaving him one short of Roger Federer’s total of 103.And where better to potentially equal Federer than Basel, the Swiss legend’s hometown tournament? Djokovic has played the event three times previously, winning it in 2009 by defeating
