Ahead of Game 1 of the Finals, both teams left the court before The Star-Spangled Banner was played, resulting in another wave of fan outrage. It’s a familiar story for a league where pregame habits are constantly dissected, like when fans criticised Caitlin Clark for not placing her hand over her heart while praising Sophie Cunningham for doing it.Now, with WNBA PR staffers caught sitting during the anthem and trying to scratch out their press tags, the quiet protest on the court has turned into an awkward mess off it.Two WNBA PR staffers kicked off a fresh wave of drama after sitting through the national anthem on press row and ignoring questions about it. To make matters worse, they were caught trying to peel off and scribble over the “WNBA PR” label on their desk to cover their tracks.Outkick reporter Dan Zaksheske was in press row and caught the whole thing, as he said:‘Two staffers for the WNBA PR department sat during the anthem, one with his arms crossed the entire time. After the anthem ended, I asked them why they didn’t stand. Neither would say.’He then followed on with another update:‘After I took the picture, they tried to peel the nameplate off the seat (even though the seating chart was sent via email) and when that didn’t work, they blacked out where it said “WNBA PR”.’The WNBA keeps embarrassing itself by constantly dodging accountability. From messy anthem cover-ups to tone-deaf responses on trans athlete debates, leadership refuses to take responsibility.Read more:‘Is this political?’ – Enes Kanter demands meeting with Adam Silver over WNBAWNBA analyst sends message to Enes Kanter amid Game 3 attendance issue‘Nothing but amazing…’ – Kara Lawson makes Angel Reese admission after Team USA experience
