The Pittsburgh Pirates enter Major League Baseball’s offseason with some obvious needs: catching help, re-signing Brandon Lowe, adding bullpen depth, and finding an offensive third baseman who can make an impact. The reality is that over the past couple of years, even with Ke’Bryan Hayes here, the Pirates’ third-base production has been among the worst in Major League Baseball. There’s a hope and expectation from the fan base that it’s going to change sometime in the near future, though there are always some constraints that we have to consider with Pittsburgh.Unfortunately, this front office and ownership haven’t shown they’re willing to spend big bucks to land some of the top available players, though, as we’ve said before, it’s not necessarily a need. There are some talented players out there who can come in and make an impact for this organization without spending a ton of money.Among those potential options, Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung was at the top of the list. Jung has proven throughout his young career that he can be one of baseball’s better third basemen when he’s at his best, earning an All-Star nod in 2023. His numbers haven’t been the same since then, but he’s still an above-average player who could help an organization looking to add offensive talent.“When it comes to discussing potential moves for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the biggest factor will always be the financials, as they’ve historically avoided spending at virtually every opportunity possible. Even though they’ve shown a newfound willingness to spend within the last year or so, this is still a reality.“Luckily for the Pirates, in Jung’s case, this shouldn’t be much of an issue at the present moment. He’s currently entering his second year of arbitration eligibility. According to Just Baseball’s estimates, he’s expected to receive just shy of $6.0 million,” Jay Staph wrote. The question with Jung is whether he can return to what he did offensively in 2023 in the power department. He posted a 113 OPS+, including a .781 OPS. He blasted 23 home runs that season and hit 25 doubles.2026 was also decent for him, but he played only 104 games. He still hit 27 doubles but only blasted 12 home runs. At the same time, he posted a career-high .827 OPS.The Pirates would have to move on from a couple of players, specifically prospects, but likely won’t have to move too much. Jung is a good player, but he’s not somebody who’s going to require some massive haul to be moved.
