PASADENA, Calif. — How is this for your first career start: A top-10 opponent, at the Rose Bowl, as a true freshman. That will be the case for Michigan State quarterback Kayd Coffman, who will start against UCLA on Saturday, Oct. 24 (3:30 p.m./CBS). Michigan State won’t have starting quarterback Alessio Milivojevic for the game, as he was listed questionable on the availability report all week, and backup Cam Fancher is still listed out for a third straight week. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that it is Coffman’s ball.Coffman took 11 snaps in relief during a blowout 31-3 loss to Wisconsin on Oct. 3. He did not attempt a pass, scrambled twice for eight yards before taking a nine-yard sack. Now, Michigan State’s hopes to snap a five-game losing streak are on Coffman’s young shoulders. UCLA is favored by 16½ points by Vegas sportsbooks — two points better than the start of the week — and ESPN Analytics gives UCLA a 83.6% chance to win.cearegood@detroitnews.com@ConnorEaregoodThis article originally appeared on The Detroit News: MSU to start true freshman QB Kayd Coffman vs. UCLA at Rose Bowl: report
