It has been a dreadful few days for those associated with LIV. Every few hours another player seems to announce that they will not be staying next year. That has, however, presented an opportunity to the DP World Tour. Many of those who have walked away from LIV have spoken of their intention to play on the European circuit in 2027.It is good news for the DP World Tour to see LIV in such a precarious position after years of turmoil. However, some are clearly concerned about the red carpet being rolled out for a number of players who have never shown great support for the tour.Eddie Pepperell fears the DP World Tour will make a mistake with the players now leaving LIV GolfCharles Howell III is one of those who intends to play on the DP World Tour next year. Before the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship earlier this month, the American had not played in an event run by the European Tour since 2001 – the year after current Race to Dubai leader Eugenio Chacarra was born. And writing for The Chipping Forecast, Eddie Pepperell admitted that there will be plenty of resentment if some LIV players are given too much of a helping hand next season.“I’ve spoken to Guy [Kinnings] on this very issue, back in the summer. I won’t betray any confidence on his side but my view was pretty simple, give a few players invites who undeniably add stardust. The Joaquin Niemanns of the world, Cam Smith, Bryson of course. Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have their exemptions. Truthfully from my perspective not much else needed to be done, just ensure everybody else goes back to the qualifying school. The idea that Charles Howell III is on this list, with all due respect to Charles – he’s a terrific guy – is utterly bizarre,” he said.“That represents a miscalculation to me, along frankly with additional names like Thomas Pieters, Branden Grace and even Louis Oosthuizen, as much as I admire his swing. None of these players are going to put enough bums on seats or in front of TVs to materially improve the balance sheet in 2027, period. I hate to sound certain about it, but I just can’t see how it can be.”LIV’s signings were unable to help the league become a successAs Pepperell notes, the DP World Tour is in a tricky position. After having its future threatened, the tour needs to think somewhat selfishly. Clearly, having Bryson DeChambeau playing the Nedbank Golf Challenge in December, for example, is a boost. The problem is that it will be the players further down the food chain who suffer, particularly in the short term.Howell III has never been a superstar of the game. He has won three times on the PGA Tour. Meanwhile, he has one top-10 in a major – 10th at the 2003 PGA Championship – and one top-10 at The Players Champi
