Shorthanded Thunder Make Statement in Double-Digit Win Over Suns

Less than 24 hours removed from both Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace suffering potentially season-ending injuries, the Oklahoma City Thunder made a statement on Monday night. With Chet Holmgren also sidelined, Oklahoma City was without three starters but still found a way to improve to 4-0 on the season, defeating the Phoenix Suns by a final score of 125-114.The Thunder held a lead of more than 20 points late in the contest before ultimately securing the double-digit victory. And while Oklahoma City was significantly shorthanded, the two players who will be tasked with carrying a heavier offensive load moving forward stepped up in a major way.Ajay Mitchell posted a career-high 30 points, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 26 points despite being somewhat limited by foul trouble. Jared McCain, who stepped into the starting lineup, chipped in 18 points of his own. Isaiah Hartenstein was also dominant, recording a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.Off the bench, rookie Aday Mara put together one of the most impactful performances of anyone on the roster. He finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, securing the first double-double of his NBA career. His presence in the paint was particularly important given Oklahoma City’s depleted rotation, and he continued to show why he could be a valuable contributor throughout his rookie campaign.Overall, the Thunder simply played more consistent defense, knocked down a higher percentage of their shots from the floor and dominated on the glass. Oklahoma City also controlled the paint, with Hartenstein and Mara providing a strong interior presence on both ends of the floor. Combined with the scoring production of Mitchell and Gilgeous-Alexander, it was a complete team effort that showcased just how deep this roster is.From here, the Thunder will travel to Dallas to take on the Mavericks on Wednesday, looking to improve to 5-0 despite being significantly shorthanded. Even with multiple key players sidelined, Oklahoma City remains one of the best teams in the NBA and will look to continue building momentum as the season progresses.
