He is working incredibly hard behind the scenes to try and rediscover the form that made him a top five player in the world three years ago.Homa has made numerous changes in order to try and turn things around, including switching caddies multiple times over the past 18 months. And he will be hoping that he is able to contend this week in Mexico in order to give him a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the 2027 season.Max Homa admits he did something ‘terrible’ on day one in MexicoHoma spoke with reporters after his opening round at Vidanta Vallarta on Thursday. The American responded when asked to sum up his performance during the opening round of the VidantaWorld Mexico Open.“It was just really gritty. I’m a bit rusty,“ Homa admitted.“Everything back in Scottsdale has been over-seeded and I haven’t played a real round of golf since Japan. I noticed it today. Prep was fine but ironed it terrible. I didn’t, I guess, dwell on it too much. I just used the rest of my game. Just had faith.“You know, sometimes you try to remind yourself of baseball, like a five-tool player, I’ve always been quite well-rounded, so instead of being disappointed, I have to use it, and be proud to use it. So I did a good job of that.“And when we made the turn, you get three par 5s on the front side, my back, and I just tried to play clean and beat those up. So I stuck with it in my head, and I just stayed in it and fought.“The fact that Homa shot a round of 66 while not being happy with his game at all is a hugely positive sign.He proved to himself on day one in Mexico that he is still capable of competing even without his very best form. And that will serve him well ahead of the new PGA Tour season next year.
