The gap between Hawaii and the rest of the Mountain West Conference in volleyball continues to grow. The Rainbow Wahine stretched their conference lead to four matches with seven to play by defeating UC Davis 25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18 on Friday at University Credit Union Center in Davis, Calif.Cha’lei Reid had six of her match-high 14 kills in the opening set and Hawaii lost a set for the fourth time in conference play before roaring back to handle the Aggies the rest of the way.The Rainbow Wahine stretched their winning streak to 11 matches, which is their longest since 2022. More importantly, the Rainbow Wahine improved to 19-3 overall and 11-0 in conference play to move four games ahead of UC Davis (11-11, 7-4) and New Mexico.Hawaii would clinch a berth in the four-team conference tournament with a win today and a Lobos victory over Grand Canyon.“That was big, for sure,” Hawaii coach Joshua Walker said. “We made a switch. We put Cha’lei next to the setter and let Tali (Hakas) play all the way around, and that’s something we hadn’t done before and it just kind of threw them off a little bit as far as what they planned for.”Hawaii, which came into the week ranked fourth in the country in opponent hitting percentage at .133, held the Aggies to a .129 mark. The Rainbow Wahine have held opponents to a hitting percentage less than .200 in 16 consecutive matches and won all but one.UC Davis, which leads the conference in serving, did not have an ace.Victoria Leyva had a team-high 19 digs and surpassed 1,000 in her UH career.“(Victoria) is just really a high-level human being in general, just how she carries herself and how she goes about her day-to-day,” Walker said.“She’s a leader. She’s able to not only take care of the stuff that she needs to take care of personally, but she’s also able to pour it into the people around her. I’m definitely not surprised she is able to reach 1,000 digs in her third year. We want her to get a few more (today), but I’m just really proud of her.”UH setter Adrianna Arquette finished with 31 assists, seven digs and four kills.Maeli Cormier added nine kills for Hawaii and Rachel Purser and Hakas each contributed seven kills.UC Davis middle blocker Ally Chandler had 13 kills with six blocks and hit .458 to lead the Aggies, who beat the Rainbow Wahine twice last season when both teams played in the Big West Conference.“When you have a middle like they do, she’s just really efficient, and when you’re playing high-level teams and good teams, the only way you can slow down players like that and find ways to avoid the block is by serving tough,” Walker said. “That’s our only way to get her out of the match.”Reid carried Hawaii offensively in the opening set with six kills. UC Davis took its second timeout trailing 17-13 and then stormed back to take a 21-19 lead on back-to-back hitting errors by Panna Ratkai.Hawaii used its second timeout and then closed the match on a 6-2 run.
