Blackhawks Struggle At 4-9-0 Record As Blashill Seeks Answers

Rick Osentoski-Imagn ImagesThe Chicago Blackhawks are in a deep hole after 13 games. They sit with a 4-9-0 record, which is the second-worst mark in the entire NHL. A recent 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, Oct. 29, made the situation feel even worse. Fans who have watched this team for years know that losing is part of the sport, but this pace is not normal for a roster full of young talent.General manager Kyle Davidson said over the summer that more experience would lead to better results. The players have that experience now, yet the team still looks lost on the ice. They go through good spurts where they take the lead, but then they cannot hold it. This pattern of self-sabotage has hurt them all season long.Stats That Tell a Hard StoryThe numbers show exactly where the team is failing. According to Blackhawk Up, the Blackhawks rank near the bottom in almost every major category. They average just 2.08 goals per game, which is second-worst in the league. Their shots per game sit at 21.6, also second-worst. On the other end, they allow 3.69 goals against per game, ranking fourth-worst.Special teams are a major problem too. The power play sits at 10 percent, which is last in the league. The faceoff win rate is 42.8 percent, also dead last. Even the penalty kill, which is at 78 percent, ranks 17th, right in the middle of the pack. These stats combine to create a team that cannot score enough to win games while giving up too many goals.Star Players in a SlumpIt is not just the system that is broken. The players are not producing either. Patrick Kane leads the team with only eight points in 13 games. Roman Kantserov has five goals, but the rest of the lineup is quiet. Connor Bedard returned from an injury, yet the team has scored just 15 goals in the seven games since his return.Tyler Bertuzzi is another big name who is struggling. He signed for a $5.5 million cap hit, a deal that looked smart for a 40-to-50-point player. To date, he has recorded only two goals and three assists, totaling five points. This pace is his worst in his career. He needs to get his feet moving faster, as his speed stats are well below the league average.Head coach Jeff Blashill knows the team is beating itself. He told reporters after the loss, “We’ve had a lot of games throughout this season where we did a lot of good things and maybe beat ourselves with critical mistakes.” He added that the recent loss to Detroit was not that kind of game, which means the team did not even play well enough to make excuses.
