TERRE HAUTE – A successful season came to an end for the Zionsville girls cross country team on Saturday afternoon, placing seventh at the IHSAA State Finals at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute. The Lady Eagles finished with 221 points, missing out on the podium by just 14 points.”We felt really good, we had some kids really step up the last couple of weeks,” Zionsville head coach Gabe Porras said. “Our seniors performed well, not just today, but the entire season. They did a great job all year.”Stelle Banwart led the Eagles, placing 38th in a time of 18:27.6. Just a half second behind her was older sister Letty, who crossed in 39th in a time of 18:28.1.Senior Jane Porzel placed 67th in 18:47.0, an identical time to freshman teammate Lilly Gahl, who was 68th.”I think both of them (the Banwart sisters) had strong days,” Porras said. “Even beyond those two, having Lilly and Jane be right next to each other, and Elizabeth and Leah were close – the girls have learned to work with each other and perform well. That’s great to see.”Rounding out the scoring line-up was Elizabeth Anderson in 126th in a time of 19:25.1.Leah Perrin was 155th in 19:39.0 and Megan Race was 212th in 20:23.4.Porzel and Race graduate, but the rest of the line-up returns.Coming into the season, only Race, Letty Banwart and Anderson had experience running in the postseason.Porras said the Zionsville system has made it so some of the younger kids can come in right away and contribute.”A lot of credit goes to the middle school coaches, at both schools, for preparing them,” Porras said. “They are highly competitive and they were eager to get out there and make an impact. That’s cool to see when you have an underclassmen influence on top of that experience. It’s motivating for sure.”In the boys race, Jack Albright placed 141st in a time of 16:25.4.Jack Corcoran placed 205th in 16:54.1.”They had a good day,” Porras said. “It’s always a challenge to go from fighting for you team to racing as an individual. This meet isn’t like anything else, and I think they both feel like they had strong performances. Jack still has a little bit to go, and I think he can use this as a springboard for the rest of his high school career, and Nate can be happy with everything he accomplished too.”As the season came to a close, Porras said it was a successful year for both the boys and girls programs.”This is the largest team we had, and with that it can be hard to get a semblance of a team,” Porras said. “I think this group did a really good job with that, even starting this summer. It was apparent, up and down the roster, how important cross country was to them and that is cool to see. I am really proud of all of them, and the nine that ran today.”
