Tarik Skubal is the bell of the ball this offseason, as the superstar ace is getting a ton of attention in the rumor mill. One team potentially in the mix is the Chicago Cubs, but there is speculation that a $400 million problem complicates things.Rumors are that teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets stand the best chance of signing the 29-year-old left-hander, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. However, it appears the Cubs are highly interested in Skubal too, but the price tag he is going to demand may be out of budget for the organization.“Skubal is far and away the best player in this class, and the expectation is he will sign before the Dec. 1 lockout,” Passan wrote. “The two most obvious suitors are the two teams with the highest payrolls in baseball: The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. There are bound to be others. The Chicago Cubs badly want Skubal. They also are skeptical that they will be willing to compete at the sort of dollars Skubal is expected to get — well in excess of $300 million, potentially in the $400 million-plus range.”Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)Passan also claims that another team that could challenge the Cubs, along with the Dodgers and Mets, for that matter, for the two-time Cy Young Award winner is the San Diego Padres. Both Michael King and Nick Pivetta are entering free agency, and the Padres could potentially make a strong push to sign Skubal. The seven-year veteran appeared in 26 games in the regular season this year. He did miss some time after loose bodies were found in his left elbow, but the recovery time wasn’t too detrimental, as he missed just 38 days. When healthy, Tarik Skubal posted a 2.72 ERA and 0.964 WHIP, with 186 strikeouts over 158.2 innings pitched.Related: Ranking 3 best Sonny Gray free agency destinations after declining mutual optionRelated: Ranking 3 best Michael King free agency destinations after contract opt-out
