DURHAM, N.C. — Rodney Hood is back with Duke basketball. The former Blue Devil standout was seen with Duke ahead of its season opener against Army on Monday, Nov. 2. Head coach Jon Scheyer said postgame that the former NBA veteran has joined the program as a coaching fellow.”Rodney is back, happened very quickly here,” Scheyer said. “My first year, I was able to coach Rodney, and he was obviously a great player here, a great pro player. He’s back in a coaching fellow role, just taking the next step in his life and his journey. Our guys couldn’t be luckier.” Hood played at Duke for the 2013-14 season, where he started in 33 games and averaged 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per contest while shooting 46.4% from the field. He went on to be drafted as the No. 23 pick overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. He spent eight years in the NBA, averaging 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists during that span.”I have a lot of respect for Rodney, just the way he came in,” Dame Sarr said postgame. “He wears his shirt just like the managers, and he was right there rebounding. For a guy that had the career he had, he doesn’t have to do that. That speaks a lot of who he is as a person. I have a lot of respect for that. I think I just embrace him being here. He’s done what I want to do. He’s done it at a high level. I’ll just try to pick his brain as much as I can.”Duke took down Army 84-50 to move to 1-0. The Blue Devils are back in action at Cameron Indoor Stadium against Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Nov. 5.
