Hometown Remix, Same Old Song: Slumping Sharks Lose 2-1

The San Jose Sharks welcome the Calgary Flames into SAP Center.Sam Dickinson scored, but the Sharks lost 2-1.Period 14 in: Not a strong San Jose Sharks penalty kill to start. Nurse block and Askarov coming across save to thank for keeping it scoreless. PK got too spread apart. Goodrow in box, so we’ll see if this holds with no regular killers in the box, but Celebrini was early on the PK.Things I saw in practice, I wonder if they will implement into the game, more strong-side breakouts with a five-man unit (less spaced out) and more 2-1-2 OZ forecheck.9 in: Lots of energy from Misa on that shift, flying down wall off the bench to keep it in, then backchecking like a demon to make life harder for the Flames. I wrote about this last game, when Wennberg gets healthy, maybe switch Misa over to wing for now, let him build some confidence there, then switch him over to center in the future? His speed would be an asset to the WillMack line.10 in: I like Smith’s deception and shot at the point. Something playing the point might help, I don’t always love Smith’s urgency and puck protection. Maybe the pressure of playing the point will make him play faster.9 left: That Stenberg slot shot created because of Smith’s ability to play fast under pressure, up high.8 left: Bystedt helping out Nurse low, that was a pretty good-looking strong-side breakout.7 left: Dickinson lucky there, that was almost a disastrous turnover. Gotta play faster there, that pass was available a split-second ago.Klapka goal: Not a good Allan turnover. Think Askarov needs to have that too, unless Orlov touched it.1 left: Failed strong-side breakout, Marchment turned it over, but they’re trying. It wasn’t a terrible period, and you’re just down 1-0, which is about the best I can say. Remenda thinks the buy-in issue might be “emotional” thing, specifically the Ottawa game. That’s why his keys tonight were simply “fire” and “jam”. There needs to be a kick of the ass somewhere. Maybe it’s just a lucky goal, a bounce, to get them going?Period 2Better strong-side breakout there leads to a Sherwood shot to start period.2 in: Weakside DZ rim by Orlov smart, Sharks couldn’t break out strong-side, leads to Flames’ icing.4 in: Sweet entry by Misa line, all three forwards connected, Marchment finds Sherwood low for probably the San Jose Sharks’ best chance so far.5 in: That’s a forced strong-side breakout. Think Misa has to make a better decision there at the wall (or hit the open Nurse with the pass), instead it’s a soft pass up the middle, I think Frost outmuscles Kesselring for the puck, don’t love that, and Sharangovich counterattacks with a Grade-A. Big Askarov save. I wonder what the directive is there? My guess for Misa is, no play up the middle, sometimes just dump it out. Misa might’ve been stick checked there, maybe that’s why the pass up the middle missed Nurse. Nurse, going back to his Edmonton days, underrated off the rush, feel like I hav
