UNM women’s basketball falls short in Amy Eagan debut

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Amy Eagan era at New Mexico started with a setback. UNM led for 34 minutes and 41 seconds before falling to visiting Seattle University 63-62 in the regular-season opener Monday. Four Lobos scored in double figures, led by Laila Abdurriqib, who turned in a double-double performance of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Mila Reynolds, Gracie Kelsey and Kate Wernli scored 10 points each. After going into the fourth quarter with a five-point lead, the Lobos watched it all slip away. The Lobos went cold, not scoring for over 7 minutes while Seattle went on a rally. Cristina Jones intercepted a Lobos pass late in the game, converting on the other end and putting Seattle up for good. Jones scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Seattle. ‘You know, we had them almost on the ropes,” said UNM head coach Amy Eagan. “We were about ready to crack that where they were going to be able to come back, and then they punched us, and we didn’t respond very well from that. So, a lot of credit to them today in everything that they did.” The Lobos struggled shooting from the three-point line, going 4 of 20 from deep. It contributed to UNM not being able to close out the game. “I think it was more of an intensity thing,” said UNM forward Gracie Kelsey. “We just kind of lost our intensity and kind of controlled the game, and that’s kind of what led to it unraveling.” The Lobos will try to give Coach Eagan her first win in Cherry and Silver Friday when they host New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m.Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
